PPG Industries announced the addition of an improved gas barrier packaging coating specifically designed for highly oxygen-sensitive products.

Bairocade HP coatings, which increase the barrier against oxygen and other gases, are the latest in PPG's line of spray-applied gas-barrier coatings for plastic containers.

Users of Bairocade HP coatings can achieve higher barrier-performance levels than with previous Bairocade coatings, or laboratory studies have shown users can also obtain the same level of protection with a 40-percent reduction in material.

Like all Bairocade coatings, Bairocade HP coatings are compatible with standard recycling procedures and PPG's proprietary colorants, enabling production of tinted containers that provide gas barrier protection and are easily recyclable.

"In existing reclaiming and cleaning processes that remove color, PPG's colored or clear Bairocade HP coatings provide a clean recycle stream using standard equipment - nothing extra is required," said Mike Gajdzik, global manager of flexible products for PPG's packaging coatings business. "Therefore, recyclate from bottles with Bairocade coatings can even be used in bottle-to-bottle applications.''
