Toledo has been hailed as the "glass capital of the world," thanks to Edward D. Libbey and Michael J. Owens. In 1886, Libbey moved from Massachusetts to Toledo and started his Libbey Glass Co.

He hired Owens, a skilled glass blower who invented a way of making bottles by machine rather than hand.

Libbey financially supported Owens in the 1903 opening of his Owens Bottle Machine Co.

Over the years, the glass industry in Toledo evolved into four companies. While their names reflect their mutual ancestry, Owens-Illinois Inc., Owens Corning Fiberglas, Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Co. and Libbey Inc. are completely separate companies.
