Durable, Elegant Elevators with Corning® Gorilla® Glass

Date: 10 February 2014

Corning® Gorilla® Glass is making the vision of glass on walls and other interior spaces depicted in Corning’s “A Day Made of Glass” video series a reality.

The tough, durable cover glass you love on your smartphones and tablets will begin appearing on the walls of elevator cabs, lobbies, and conference rooms.

“Building owners understand that even though the elevator is the smallest room in the building, for a few minutes, they have a captive audience and must make a good impression,” said Henry Dunnenberger III, business director, Innovative Glass Solutions. “With Gorilla Glass, architects and owners can bring elevator walls to life with bright, vibrant colors while feeling confident that this image will be maintained for years to come.

Gorilla Glass is a versatile material that provides unique attributes for the interior architecture market. The optical clarity of Gorilla Glass addresses a common issue architects have with color match. Colors are incredibly vibrant, and whites remain “true white” without showing shades of blue or amber. Colors and whites will not fade or deteriorate over time.

In addition, Gorilla Glass is durable and scratch resistant, easy to clean and requires minimal maintenance.

Extremely light weight, Gorilla Glass also provides building owners with the freedom to install it where weight is critical, such as in elevators.  Finally, Gorilla Glass provides unsurpassed quality – the same manufacturing process developed for the consumer electronics space ensures a quality level that is unmatched by current architectural glass alternatives.

Gorilla Glass can be laminated to panels and integrated into modular wall systems, providing even more benefits to building owners. Unlike conventional custom jobs, modular systems are quick and easy to install, thereby minimizing construction time and labor cost.

Modular systems can also be pre-fabricated -- ensuring a quality product with minimal delays or overruns.  In addition, panels are quick and easy to replace, enabling designers to change their design more frequently at a lower cost.

“Designers are really excited about the ‘future proofing’ that Gorilla Glass solutions enable,” Dunnenberger said. “Because panels are easy to switch out, owners can upgrade their wall systems as new technologies such as integrated active displays become available. We are actively working to develop exciting new capabilities that will provide even more options for architects and building owners looking to create something special.”
