Corning Incorporated (GLW) announced on 05/27/09 that CorningGorilla™ glass has been designed into the Dell Adamo, a newly released laptop computer that represents the pinnacle of craftsmanship and design.

The Adamo’s revolutionary display design features an edge-to-edge cover glass with a unique glass panel that covers the top half of the notebook enclosure. The high-end Adamo laptop packs mobile computing technology into an ultra-slim form measuring just .65 inches thick and weighing less than four pounds. "In designing Adamo, we set the goal of creating the thinnest notebook in the world while keeping a commitment to precision craftsmanship and fine materials,” said Alex Gruzen, senior vice president, Dell. “Collaboration with Corning on Gorilla glass allowed us to create a truly stunning and remarkably thin, yet robust product."

“Aesthetics and style are becoming key differentiators in the laptop market today, and Corning’s Gorilla glass enabled Dell designers to feature glass on the Adamo in a way not done before,” said Jim Steiner, senior vice president, Corning Specialty Materials. “The unique properties of the glass allow for reduced thickness and weight without compromising durability. In addition, on the glass surface, Corning provides an easy-to-clean, wear-resistant coating, which allows for easy smudge removal and maintenance of the pristine viewing surface.”

After undergoing a chemical strengthening process, Gorilla glass becomes a durable, scratch-resistant liquid crystal display (LCD) cover. It is available in a variety of thicknesses ranging from 0.5 millimeters up to 2.0 millimeters, providing flexibility in device design as well as glass processing. This environmentally friendly alumino-silicate glass is produced with Corning’s proprietary fusion draw process, which enables the production of uniform thin sheets with a pristine surface and is also adaptable to scalable sheet sizes for optimal throughput. The result is an as-drawn surface that in many cases requires no additional finishing, while providing a wide range of thickness options, low-surface roughness, and superior flatness. These benefits allow Corning customers to optimize device design and fabrication efficiencies.
