British Glass Responds to HSE Consultation

Date: 8 September 2014

On behalf of, and in conjunction with its members, British Glass recently responded to the Health and Safety Executive’s consultation on proposals to exempt self-employed persons from section 3 (2) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, except those undertaking activities on a prescribed list.     The British Glass Health and Safety Steering Group were concerned that the changes proposed could introduce confusion for self-employed workers who work within glass sectors and that the proposed list of those not exempt is too complicated for a typical self-employed individual to quickly assess, without a basic understanding of the regulations or third-party advice. If the proposals in the consultation were to go ahead, there could be a misunderstanding that all self-employed workers are exempt, when in fact, those working within our sectors and on our sites would still need to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act.Thank you to all members who submitted comments to us, we will keep you updated on the outcome of the consultation. For further information on the consultation itself, visit the HSE website: http://www.hse.gov.uk/consult/condocs/cd273.htmTo read British Glass’ full response to the consultation, please log-on to the members area of the website: http://www.britglass.org.uk/update/454
