Miyachi Europe, the leading supplier of laser and resistance welding systems and laser marking products, has produced saw blade systems successfully and repeatedly over the past years.

Band saws are used to cut a wide range of materials – from stone to metal or from wood to increasingly exotic materials such as laminated or composite materials.



The requirements placed on the band saw are increasing. Saw blades get thinner and thinner to reduce waste. Cutting speeds increase to save time. The biggest challenge, however, is the treatment of asymetric materials.



These products place a very high demand on the band saw due to the uneven mechanical stresses on the tip of the band saw. This tip is made of hard metal which is resistance welded upon the band saw. These tips are typically ball, cylinder or asymetric shaped. After the resistance weld the tip can be grinded or heat treated before the band saw can be used. The connection of the hard metal tip to the band saw determines greatly the properties and lifetime of the band saw.



Welding of hard metal materials is very special. The material properties of hard metal are a challenge to weld reliably with a consistent strength and without micro cracks that can cause failures during the life time of the band saw. The complex shape of the hard metal tips requires controlling the weld process within tight limits to balance the heat buildup and cooling down process during welding.
