Date: 10 June 2011
Though all presentations and findings have been thoroughly documented on the Conference web pages physical presentations have come and gone as is always the case with Conferences. GPD 2011 now launches two new tangible innovations, a permanent glass construction “String of Pearls” through an Architects competition and a temporary transformation of a central Tampere City Park, the Sorsapuisto, into a public Solar and Energy Park.
The idea with the permanent, smallish, glass structures to be built based on an Architects Competition is to leave a footmark of the .development of glass technology for all to see, explains Jorma Vitkala, Chairman of the GPD Organizing Committee. This project offers architects an opportunity to display their ideas on what glass can do in this age, it offers glass industry a chance to implement some of their most fantastic innovations and it extends the expert view into something tangible for all. The benefits of advanced glass construction are intended for the end-users, the public, using the buildings and interiors created by industry. Since the GPD is staged every other year we foresee a series of advanced and continuously better “glass structure pearls” that will serve s documentation of glass technology advances over the years. The structures will be equipped with presentation units illustrating the technologies used. Cooperation with the City of Tampere, host to the GPD, ensures that these structures are built in harmony with city planning.
