Asahi Glass Co said it will spend three bln yen to build a fluorinated resin ETFE plant in the UK to meet growing global demand for the glass.

Construction will begin in January 2006 at the site of its subsidiary Asahi Glass Fluoropolymers UK Ltd in Lancashire.

The project, once operational, is expected to raise its output capacity for ETFE by about 20 pct, it said.

Fluorinated resin ETFE is used as an insulating material for electrical wires and as a raw material in the production of film.

Asahi Glass currently produces ETFE at its Chiba and Kashima plants near Tokyo, which supply the bulk of the world market's requirements.
