FT: Owens-Illinois standardizes on Polycom video communications equipment

Polycom, a worldwide leader in the convergence of interactive voice, video and data communications, announced that Owens-Illinois , the leading manufacturer of glass and plastics packaging products, with more than 140 locations around the world, is standardizing on Polycom's ViewStation(TM) products for its worldwide video communication needs.

Owens-Illinois uses videoconferencing to connect employees in North America, South America, Asia, Europe and Australia, and for communicating with partners and customers dispersed around the globe. The company has deployed Polycom's ViewStation worldwide. The North America Glass Containers unit estimates it saved $250,000 in travel costs and lost productivity in 2001.

"The demands of operating our worldwide business with increased labor efficiency and a reduced cost structure are challenges that we face every day within Owens-Illinois, so that we can continue to provide high-quality products at the lowest possible price to our customers," said Matt Fagley, manager of operations development for the North America Glass Containers unit of Owens-Illinois. "Communication tools are a major key to our organization's success, and the Polycom ViewStation units have provided the audio and video quality we were looking for in a multipoint videoconferencing solution. Polycom has demonstrated their leadership within the videoconferencing industry by providing affordable and robust communication systems, making an immediate impact on the productivity of our team-oriented operations."

"Polycom is pleased to provide tools that enable Owens-Illinois to work more closely and effectively with its employees and business partners despite geographic barriers," said Craig Malloy, senior vice president and general manager of video communications at Polycom. "More and more companies are realizing that high-quality interactive video communications is an essential business tool that not only more than pays for itself in hard costs, but also generates a significant increase in productivity and teamwork."
