Company description

The Bridgestone Mission--Serving society with superior quality--steers activity at every Bridgestone Group plant in every nation.

Shojiro Ishibashi established Bridgestone Tire Co., Ltd., in 1931 to manufacture and market the new product. From the beginning, he held international aspirations for his business, and he christened the company with an English-sounding name. The surname Ishibashi literally means stone bridge. Reversing the order produced a name that the founder hoped would feel more familiar to people of all nationalities.

Bridgestone soon became the largest manufacturer of tires in Japan and expanded its business in other markets. The growth of Japan’s automobile industry subsequently propelled us into the top ranks of the global tire and rubber industry. Following our 1988 acquisition of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, we became the largest in our industry.

Our predecessors at Bridgestone began making diversified products in the 1930s, soon after they started making tires. Today, our diversified operations encompass automotive components, industrial products, polyurethane foam products, construction materials, parts and materials for electronic equipment, bicycles and sporting goods. Diversified business generates about one-fourth of total sales in the Bridgestone Group. Our growing line of products for electronic equipment includes precision rollers for office machines and functional films for solar cells and plasma displays as well as for laminating glass for architectural applications inside and outside.

What is Evasafe™?

EVASAFE is an EVA-based thermoset adhesive film with a 3D cross-linking capability developed, patented and trade-mark registered by Bridgestone as an interlayer film for laminated glass (EVA stands for Ethylene Vinyl Acetate). EVASAFE is translucent with embossments on one side before heating. It displays excellent transparency and high adhesion strength after the heat curing process. It provides for extremely stable properties in the end product even under severe conditions or aging.  EVASAFE is increasingly applied as an adhesive for photovoltaic modules and for a variety of optical products, due to its excellent adhesion, durability/aging, optical properties, easy process handling and storage, high strength and stability, low moisture ingression, etc.

Decorative glass can be combined with imprinted pet film

EVASAFE™ is the ‘premium’ inter-layer product. In the Laminated Glass Industry it is experiencing strong demand growth in the areas of exterior/interior architectural and designer glass, e.g. paneling, furniture, façade, tempered and special application / smart glass. This is due to its ‘unique’ performance and quality characteristics.

Open edges exposed to the weather can be laminated
Advantages
  • High transparency.
  • Good adhesion strength, stability and physical properties to various kinds of substrates ranging from glass, metals to plastic films, etc. Thereby, EVASAFE is ‘unique’ in enabling glass processors to make very high value-adding ‘designer’ architectural glass in extremely creative manners. Naturally careful checking is required for each new substrate/insert ‘designer’ application.
  • Excellent durability against heat, moisture, UV, etc. EVASAFE is hydrophobic, has a three dimensional cross-linked structure and does not contain any plasticizers. It displays high long-term reliability also under severe conditions in outdoor uses.
  • Easy handling / processing / high productivity / reliability
    * Since EVASAFE does not exhibit blocking characteristics, there is no need to apply sodium bicarbonates.
    * Due to its high flexural strength and non-sticky nature, it can easily be processed, with high productivity, and with less chance of trapping air.
    * Due to the fact that it is thermo-set cross-linked interlayer, the end-product requires little/no edge cleaning after curing.
    * Its shrinkage rate is minimal under curing.
    * It can be stored under normal conditions (at room temp.).
    * The adhesion strength of EVASAFE in the end-product is not influenced by relative humidity in the environment.
    * The EVASAFE film contains no water.
  • Due to its exceptional adhesion/strength and high productivity processing possibilities, it provides for alternative methods to laminate glass, other than the autoclave process.
  • Good impact resistance over a wide temperature range and after temperature / humidity / UV aging.
  • Good sound insulation performance particularly in the higher frequency range compared with PVB.
  • Low melt viscosity or good fluidity which leads to the easy lamination process with a wide variety of glass such as figured glass, tempered glass, curved glass, etc. as well as with inserted materials like fabrics, wood, perforated sheet metal and others.
Product range
EVASAFE film for Laminated Glass exists in different blends: clear with UV-cut off at 380 nm, clear with UV-cut off at 400 nm, and milky-white. Other colors can be achived by inserting a PET film in the desired color. Standard widths are 1260 mm, 1800 mm, and 2200 mm for the clear EVASAFE with 380 nm UV-cut off, 2070 mm for the clear EVASAFE with 400 nm UV-cut off, and 1260 mm and 2200 mm for milkywhite EVASAFE. Standard length is 130 m. The 400-nm UV-cut off blend is delivered in a standard length of 150 m. Clear EVASAFE in double thickness (0.8 mm) is available in 1800 mm width an 65 m length.
