Members of AAMA’s Glass Material Council (GMC) Marketing Committee and Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance's (IGMA) Visual Quality Task Group are developing a consumer guide for homeowners which will explain allowable glass obstructions according to industry standards.

Following AAMA Board of Directors’ approval at the 2012 Summer Conference, the AAMA/IGMA Understanding Glass Standards White Paper Task Group was formed.During the 76th Annual Conference, task group members reviewed a draft of the consumer guide.

During an April 2013 conference call, the joint task group developed additional topics to include within the consumer guide:

  • Intro to General Characteristics of Glass

  • Product Types

  • Types of glass (clear, coated, heat strengthened, laminated, insulating, tempered distortion, coated glass color differences)

  • Industry Standards

  • Viewing Your Glass

  • Acceptable Visual Characteristics of Glass

Additionally during the call, a motion was made to change the scope of the task group to “To develop consumer-focused information explaining glass standards that is inclusive of laminated, heat strengthened, coated and insulating glass.”Following the AAMA Summer Conference, task group members will review new information added to the draft based on the topics mentioned above. A conference call will be scheduled for mid-July. If you would like more information on the development of the consumer guide, contact Sam Sinkhorn, AAMA Communications Coordinator.
