Belarusian glass manufacturers should sell more window glass inside and outside the country. The modernization of the country’s glass-making industry was discussed at a regular session of the working group tasked with straightening out the Belarusian civil engineering industry on 2 August.

The session was chaired by Head of the Belarus President Administration Andrei Kobyakov, BelTA has learned.

After the session Andrei Kobyakov said he was confident that Belarusian glass industry enterprises have the potential to rack up their output and improve the effectiveness of sales. The modernization that has been accomplished will help them do it because the merchandise they now make complies with modern standards. Apart from that, Belarusian glass makers can use their own raw materials, in particularly, locally available quartz sand while soda ash has to be imported for now. An analysis of the glass industry indicates that the window glass market is highly competitive and requires more up-to-date solutions for marketing and logistics. It is necessary to work out and introduce new products. The enterprises and the Architecture and Construction Ministry, which supervises them, have been instructed to pay attention to these factors.

On the whole, the current state of Belarusian glass industry enterprises is good, they operate in the black, their markets are expanding, however, in order to keep positive dynamics going, the enterprises themselves should be more active, believes the Head of the Belarus President Administration. In his words, the Belarusian glass industry has yet to satisfy the entire demand of the civil engineering industry for quality and affordable Belarus-made glass.

The President has repeatedly pointed out the good opportunities that the glass industry can explore in view of the massive construction projects in the country and abroad. Foreign investors have arrived and work hard in the glass industry, which is a good sign for the industry’s future. A program has been passed to guide the development of the national glass industry in 2006-2010.

The Belarusian glass industry comprises 18 enterprises, OAO Gomelglass is the largest one.
