This impressive 22 metre long skylight was part of a £25m refurbishment programme undertaken by the Main Contractor (Simpson (York) Ltd).
This whole scheme included the five existing retail floors, along with the conversion of the 5th floor from staff office space into additional retail areas.
Two escalators now carry the shoppers up into these new retail areas around the central atrium. The rooflight was constructed using Schüco’s FW 60+ system, for which Roofglaze is an approved fabricator.
Roofglaze’s Sales Director Robert Culley explains why this rooflight system was used: “The Schüco FW 60+ system is our preferred solution for this type of project, due to its enhanced structural properties and flexibility for complex designs of this nature”.
The end-client was concerned about excessive solar heat gain beneath the large area of glass and, following consultation, Roofglaze recommended using a 6mm SunGuard 62/34 high performance heat soaked toughened outer pane. For safety reasons, an 8.8mm clear laminated inner was incorporated into the double glazed units.
Our installation team worked a combination of day and night shifts in order to ensure that this project was completed ahead of schedule, allowing internal works and store fitting to be carried out following handover.
Natural daylight has been well documented in recent years as a key beneficial factor in successful retail spaces, providing a pleasant and relaxed environment for shoppers, as well as ideal lighting conditions for the products on sale.
This flagship installation is further evidence of Roofglaze’s growing profile in the retail sector, with other recently completed projects including; the prestigious Prada and Burberry stores at Bicester Village Retail Outlet, London’s Westfield Shopping Centre, Brent Cross Shopping Centre and the refurbishment of the Arcadia Shopping Centre in Ealing.
