Contraflam provides fire-safety protection at Pioneer Point

Date: 28 May 2013

CONTRAFLAM fire insulation glass from GLASSOLUTIONS features in two new residential towers situated just a short sprint away from Olympic Park, main venue for the 2012 games.

The towers of Pioneer Point in Ilford stand at 25 and 33 storeys high respectively and house over 250 high-quality serviced apartments. The accommodation commands spectacular view across East London and the City skyline.

Komfort, the specialist partitioning company, was commissioned to ensure fire-safety and evacuation requirements were met without compromising the style and architectural appeal of the iconic buildings.

Komfort’s initial contract was for the design, manufacture and installation of 50 fully glazed 60/60 fire rated screens with single doors installed in the stairwells of the South and North Towers. The Komfort 5000 Series thermally broken steel framed system was fitted with 29mm thick CONTRAFLAM glass throughout.

CONTRAFLAM is a range of fully insulating, clear, fire-resistant safety glass. Featuring a layer of gel between the double-glazing which offers from 30-120 minutes of integrity and insulation (EI30-EI120), it can be used for both internal and external areas, for installation into steel, aluminium or timber frames, partitions, and doors. At Pioneer Point, 60 minutes’ protection is provided.

As a result of the quality of their work on the initial contract, Komfort was awarded a further contract to install additional screens and doors, using CONTRAFLAM to provide the same level of fire protection performance to the lower level common use floors, in particular the concierge area, which provides 24-hour assistance and security to residents.

Because of the scale of the project, the size of the glass panels and on-site restrictions, a team of specialist glass movers manually transported all 300 panes to the appropriate levels. The fire screens were then fitted by a second team of specialist installers across the two towers in two phases to suit the contractor’s programme.

CONTRAFLAM is the only integrity and insulation fire-resistant glass to be manufactured in the UK. It is manufactured at the GLASSOLUTIONS facility in Coventry, under license from the Saint-Gobain fire-glass specialists, Vetrotech.
