BENTELER - Display Glass Processing Machines

Date: 1 December 2014

Benteler stands for intelligent glass processing and automation technology - In recent years there has been a new development in flat glass application.

Modern TV, computer, and handheld displays consist of a significant extent of extremely thin, flexible, and scratch resistant glass.

Benteler strives for becoming Europe’s No. 1 Machine Supplier to the Display Industry

Benteler offers for this challenging market a wide-range of innovative equipments and solutions, with a focus on cutting, grinding, cleaning and handling equipment. Innovative Display Glass Grinding Machine A completely new development is the DSP grinding machine for ultrathin display substrate glass. From the beginning the equipment was designed for installation in clean rooms and with a focus on maximizing precision and quality of the processed product.

The processing starts with centering the incoming glass sheet on an air float table. The glass then is fixed by vacuum and measured in it’s outer dimensions with sensors. In step two the glass edges are ground according to the detected size and position of the glass utilizing CNC controlled motor spindles.

Step three, the final polishing of the edge is also done CNC controlled. Thanks to the tight production monitoring, smallest stock removal rates can be achieved which allows to use very fine grinding wheels. This has a positive impact on the transverse rupture stress.

A unique feature: Benteler’s cooling water extraction system

Perfect cooling of the grinding tool is a major key for a fail safe grinding process. But at the same time the particle loaded cooling water is virtually making the enivironment dirty and leads to increased maintenance efforts and longer downtimes. In a Benteler Machine, cooling water is applied precisely at the point of use and then extracted by vacuum suction. Overspray therefore is limited to not more than 10 to 15 mm from the glass edge. The rest of the substrate as well as all of the conveyor systems of the machine stay dry. Corrosion of the grinder due to the water is virtually eliminated.

State of the Art Control Systems and Maintainability

The control system allows for line integration and Manufacturing Execution System (MES) connection. Various control parameters are available and ground quality can be tuned thanks to frequency driven motor spindles. In the control, the operator can select from a wide range of orientation cut shapes so that customer specific request can be fulfilled easily. The machine is equipped with 200 mm in diameter grinding and polishing wheels and is multi groove ready. An automatic wheel dressing can be provided as an option. A special eye was kept on uptime and yield under 24/7 operation conditions. In particular the grinding wheel change is easy and clean. The tools are released by pressing a pushbutton and a new tool can be locked in in the same simple way. With this technology in combination with the absence of glass powder contaminated cooling water, tool change time is reduced to minutes and regular planned maintenance is shorter and less often necessary that compared to other manufacturers products. Robust German engineering ensures a high repeatability even after years of use. The grinding machine can be ordered with fixed working width equal to a specific GEN dimension or with a flexible working width which can cover a certain range of product sizes.
