AAMA Honorary Member Lyon Evans Passes Away

He attended Stony Brook School and Colgate University, where he graduated in 1940 with a degree in architecture.



According to the Wausau Daily Herald, “He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard upon graduation, serving in a picket boat out of the Tiana Coast Guard station on Long Island and was honorably discharged when the war still lingered. More than 65 years ago, Lyon helped form and was the key technical member of the then "new association," the Architectural Aluminum Manufacturers Association (AAMA). In 1957, he joined Hope's windows, Jamestown, NY, and worked there until 1975, when he moved to Wausau. He became Vice President of Design Engineering and Research with the former Wausau Metals.” [Wausau Metals is now Wausau Window and Wall Systems.]



“I am thankful and privileged to have had the opportunity to work with Lyon during my tenure at Wausau Metals. The library of Technical Bulletins he wrote between 1976 and 1978 served as the foundation blocks for my fenestration education. I respect his contributions to both AAMA and Wausau Metals immensely,” states Ken Brenden, AAMA Technical Services Manager.



In a recent letter to AAMA, Lyon shared his thoughts on AAMA’s beginnings and its growth. “Blessed with a continuous input of technical know-how from our flow of new members, I spent some forty plus years (1945-1987) working with AAMA, being continually prodded and encouraged by my employers (well knowing that my success or failure might well effect their bottom line). I sure did love every one of those years…helping to organize, establish and participate in AAMA’s many technical committees developing our ever increasing numbers of product certification programs, specifications, standards, test procedures and criteria.”



“Lyon was inducted as an AAMA Honorary Member on May 2, 1989. His contributions to the association’s beginnings and dedication to its success can still be felt today. We are humbled by his foresight and steadfast allegiance to this industry. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife June and their family during this difficult time,” according to Rich Walker, AAMA President and CEO.
