Date: 7 June 2011

On 6 June 2011 Expocentre Fairgrounds hosted the opening ceremony of the Mir Stekla'2011 International Exhibition for Glass Products, Manufacturing, Processing and Finishing Technology.

The ceremony was staged in one of the most beautiful pavilions of Expocentre Fairgrounds the Forum Pavilion. Filled with light the glass pyramid of the pavilion conveys all nuances, splendour and variety of glass, as well as engineering and technological features of its manufacturing.

The Mir Stekla exhibition is held here for the 13th time. The show, marked with all honorary awards of the exhibition industry: the Approved Event Logos of UFI – the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, and RUEF – the Russian Union of Exhibitions and Fairs, is organized by Expocentre Fairgrounds and the Russian Union of Architects under the auspices of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Moscow City Government.

On behalf of the organizers, Deputy Director General of Expocentre Fairgrounds Anatoly Sobolev welcomed the exhibitors, the number of which this year has exceeded 250. The fact that more then half of them are Russian companies attests to a successful development of the Russian glass industry. Among 25 participating countries the largest displays in the form of national pavilions are presented by Germany and Italy. The exhibition is showcasing the achievements of leading global glass manufacturers and distributors.

The scale and dynamic of the Mir Stekla project allows concluding that the demand for and the interest in the event are growing.

Honorary President of the Russian Union of Architects Yury Gnedovsky underlined that the history of the exhibition reflects the development of the glass industry. It has turned from a promising event into an industry-leading forum, and its 13-year history shows that the role of glass in architecture keeps evolving.

Glass is an extraordinary material, which allows linking the inner and outer spaces. Not only does it produce an unrivalled effect but also has unique qualities. 'Today, we have a broadest array of glass types applied to diverse areas', noted Mr. Gnedovsky. 'Glass has become a symbol of modern architecture, while the exhibition, with its large attendance, is evidence of the important role and healthy development of this sector.'

Mir Stekla is a launch pad for all innovations in the industry. This year is the first time that Mir Stekla is hosting the Glass in Architecture contest, held by the Russian Union of Architects, for the National Award to be made to the best implemented project using glass and translucent structures. Vice-President of the Russian Union of Architects Georgy Solopov invited the visitors to view the contest entries, displayed in the centre of the Forum Pavilion, and to attend the award ceremony, celebrating the winners of the contest, to be held at the venue on 8 June.

During the opening ceremony the participants in Mir Stekla'2011 were welcomed by Chairman of the Management Board of the Russian Society of Construction Engineers Oleg Lobov and Head of the Large-Scale Infrastructure Projects Department of the Builders Association of Russia Ilya Dmitriyev.

We invite industry specialists to take part in the Mir Stekla'2011 International Exhibition, located in Pavilion No. 1 and the Forum Pavilion.

The exhibition is open till 9 June. Exhibition open hours: 6 - 8 June: 10.00 - 18.00, 9 June: 10.00 - 16.00.
