The U.S. Department of State -- after meeting Thursday with Sens. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, representatives from the office of Sen.

Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. and Steuben Glass -- will rebid the final four years of a $5.4 million glassware contract for U.S. embassies worldwide.

The State Department had previously awarded the contract to a company that immediately outsourced the work to a foreign manufacturer.

In a letter written early last month to Secretary of State and former New York Senator Hillary Clinton, the senators said that American glassware manufacturers, including companies such as Corning's Steuben Glass, were not invited to bid for the work.

The senators' letter also asked how the contract was awarded and requested a copy of the contract. Thursday's meeting was scheduled as a response to the letter.
