Bernard Tschumi has won a design competition for an Acropolis Museum in Athens. He was chosen in a field with 11 other finalists, including Daniel Libeskind.The museum, which will be located at the foot of the Acropolis, will be linked to other ancient archaeological sites by pedestrian walkways.
The top of the Tschumi design is a glass-enclosed space for a gallery that could house the Elgin marbles, also known as the Parthenon sculptures. Visitors will be able to view the sculptures against the backdrop of the Parthenon building from which they originated.
The Greek government hopes that by the time the building is completed in 2004, Britain will have agreed to return the Elgin marbles. Construction of the museum will begin in 2002.
