St. Gallen (Switzerland), February 11, 2011. The international technology group SCHOTT that has its headquarters in Mainz, Germany, held its annual results press conference this year in St. Gallen, Switzerland, on February 11. The Chairman of the Board of Management, Prof. Udo Ungeheuer, also reported on how the company’s activities are developing in Switzerland. SCHOTT forma vitrum ag from St. Gallen is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of syringes, vials, and cartridges for use in primary packaging for the pharmaceutical industry. SCHOTT Schweiz in Yverdon-les-Bains, on the other hand, specializes in processing, polishing and vacuum coating optical components. Including the sales office based in St. Gallen that sells the products SCHOTT Group makes in Switzerland, SCHOTT employs a staff of 750.

During the fiscal year 2009/2010 that ended on September 30, 2010, the Swiss companies succeeded in increasing their sales by approx. 25% to 222 million Swiss francs (approx. 155 million euros). “Here, in Switzerland, we produce the high level of quality that the international markets expect of SCHOTT,” Prof. Ungeheuer emphasized as he spoke with the press. He projected yet another increase in sales for the current fiscal year to around 260 million Swiss francs (approx. 200 million euros). In terms of revenue, Switzerland currently ranks fourth for SCHOTT Group behind Germany, the U.S. and Japan. SCHOTT continues to invest here to ensure that the Swiss manufacturing companies are able to maintain their lead. The company plans to invest 13 million Swiss francs on fixed assets in the current fiscal year.

Switzerland is not just a strong manufacturing site, but also an important sales market for SCHOTT Group. During the fiscal year 2009/2010, SCHOTT managed to sell products worth 77 million Swiss francs (approx. 53 million euros) here. The most important products here are photovoltaic modules, optical glasses, electronic components, pharmaceutical tubing and pharmaceutical packaging, but also flat glass for the household appliance industry.

SCHOTT recognized the importance of the Swiss market and its technological standard early on. The origins of the sales company go back to the 1950s. SCHOTT used to supply the forerunners of both of today’s manufacturing companies, forma vitrum and Guinchard, with pharmaceutical tubing and/or optical glasses as intermediate products. As the markets became increasingly global, however, it seemed to make good sense to enter into a partnership with SCHOTT that ultimately resulted in these entities becoming part of SCHOTT Group.
