Experts from German companies and universities delivered papers at a one-day conference held at Mainz in mid-November and attended by some 160 delegates on the subject of 'Surface engineering – New areas of application for optical functional coatings'.

New techniques, processes and products were presented and discussed by the various speakers and were also on display in an exhibition attended by more than 30 different firms.

The conference was organized by the Frankfurt RheinMain regional business development association and Schott Management Board member Dr. Udo Ungeheuer in the presence of the Rhineland Palatinate Economics Minister Hans-Artur Bauckhage emphasized the importance of plastics in combination with innovative coating technologies: 'We are actively working on giving even greater importance to this subject in the future, for this will enable products to be produced that provide something visibly new.' Schott had set itself the goal of becoming a center for the development of this technology in the Rhineland Palatinate and bringing together all the synergies not only in the country but also internationally.

Conferences such as this one, which provided a platform for the exchange of knowledge and networking, were an important medium in this in dealing jointly with the enormous tasks which would have to be faced up to in the future.
