Self-tinting Suntuitive glass by Pleotint, LLC, is being installed on the corporate headquarters of Woodward, Inc., in Fort Collins, Colorado.

The 60,000-square-foot project is part of a new, 900,000-square-foot campus for the industrial-controls manufacturer.

Designed by Dearborn, Michigan–based Ghafari Associates, the three-story building will incorporate sustainable elements, daylighting, and views of the Rocky Mountains, enhanced through the use of Suntuitive glass on the building’s south-facing façade. The performance of the building’s envelop is engineered to exceed the energy code in Colorado, which is one of the strictest in the country, according to Chad Simkins, vice president of Pleotint.

“Energy codes are becoming increasingly important with new construction projects,” Simkins says. “They place strict performance requirements on glass—reducing U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient minimums, and increasing visible light transmittance requirements. Self-tinting Suntuitive glass can help buildings exceed these energy codes, while optimizing interior daylighting and comfort for occupants.”

When paired with low-emissivity glass in an insulating glass unit, Suntuitive glass can produce visible light transmittance of as high as 60 percent in a clear state and solar heat gain coefficients of as low as 0.11 in a darkened state, and reduce heating-, cooling-, and lighting-related energy costs.

The headquarters building is expected to be completed in December 2015.
