Self-cleaning glass selected by building owners, facility managers in nationwide survey - SUNCLEAN(R) self-cleaning glass by PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) has earned a 2014 Top Product Award from Building Operating Management (BOM) magazine.

The award recognizes the most popular, innovative and useful products as selected by building owners and facility management professionals in a nationwide survey.SUNCLEAN(R) self-cleaning glass (left) features a proprietary titanium dioxide (TiO2) coating that, when activated by ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun, causes organic material to decay gradually and then rinse away when contacted by rainwater.Water beads on conventional clear glass (right), which leads to water spots and streaking.

SunClean glass is made with a proven, proprietary titanium dioxide (TiO2) coating that, when activated by ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, causes organic material to decay gradually and then rinse away when contacted by rainwater. Introduced last year for commercial building applications, the glass is ideal for skylights, canopies, walkway covers, shading devices and other sloped or difficult-to-access glazings because it can reduce or eliminate the need to wash them manually.

SUNCLEAN(R) self-cleaning glass (left) features a proprietary titanium dioxide (TiO2) coating that, when activated by ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun, causes organic material to decay gradually and then rinse away when contacted by rainwater. Water beads on conventional clear glass (right), which leads to water spots and streaking.

SunClean glass features a moderately reflective first-surface coating that is applied to clear glass. It can be used monolithically, in a laminate or in combination with SUNGATE(R) passive, low-emissivity (low-e) and SOLARBAN(R) solar control, low-e glasses in insulating glass units (IGUs) to optimize energy and environmental performance.

The coating for SUNCLEAN(R) glass becomes photocatalytic when activated by ultraviolet light from the sun. Photocatalysis (right), as illustrated above, enables SunClean glass to slowly decompose organic materials when exposed to UV light. Conventional uncoated glass (left) is not photocatalytic.

SunClean glass also may be combined with PPG’s entire collection of tinted glasses certified through the CRADLE TO CRADLE CERTIFIED(CM) program to meet desired performance and appearance specifications. It can be tempered or heat-strengthened, and it is available in sizes as large as 130 inches by 204 inches.

The coating for SUNCLEAN(R) glass is hydrophilic (right), which causes drops of water to flatten and spread into a thin sheet of running water that rinses away loosened or decomposed organic material. Conventional clear glass (left) is hydrophobic, which causes water to bead on its surface and creates the potential for spotting and streaking.

2014 BOM Top Product Award winners were chosen by 100,000 industry professionals through a series of surveys sent randomly to readers of BOM and the magazine’s affiliated website, www.FacilitiesNet.com. Sixty-seven award winners were selected from among 465 potential products featured in the magazine and on the website from Oct. 1, 2012, to Sept. 30, 2013.
