The 200-pound murals eventually will be hung around campus.
Art teacher Cathy Tanasse initiated the project and secured a $1,500 grant from the Snohomish Education Association. It has taken more than 40 students and numerous community members to shape the donated stained glass and ceramic tiles into vibrant-colored murals.
The murals represent the various subjects taught in the C building, including oceanography, mathematics and earth sciences.
One, titled "Under the Sea," depicts marine life. Two others are landscapes, and the fourth symbolizes the future.
Once the project is complete, art students will focus on creating some pieces to be displayed around the city.
"We're really concentrating on getting out into the community," Tanasse said.
She and her students have completed several public art projects, including the bench next to City Hall and a mural at the school's library.
"It's really great for the kids to come back and see something they've worked on still up. They can still feel a part of the school and the community," she said.
Stained glass was a class act
Three years of meticulously piecing together 700 pounds of stained glass have come to an end at Snohomish High School. Students from the school's art honor society spent several hours last weekend completing four 4-by-8-foot murals.
