Solutia Inc.'s Contract Carpet Group announces the addition of Nyloboard LLC to our "Partners for Renewal Program." Nyloboard LCC, headquartered in Covington, Ga., is a start-up company with a family of exciting new synthetic waterproof construction materials under development.

Nyloboard(TM) is made from post industrial and post consumer carpet. "We believe this is a significant step in Solutia's long standing commitment to environmental sustainability," revealed Dr. Robert Peoples, Ph.D., director of carpet recycle and business development. "This product not only contributes to the CARE goal of landfill diversion of carpet, but the products are made entirely from used materials." One of the neat benefits of Nyloboard is that it does not contain cellulose. "Simply put, we do not have to cut down trees to make our product," he continued.

Nyloboard President Forrest Bacon said, "This is a major opportunity to do what's right for the environment and at the same time deliver a product with superior properties." Nyloboard(TM) demonstrates superior screw retention, does not split, is dimensionally stable, and is resistant to termite attacks.

"There is one aspect of Nyloboard that Solutia found particularly interesting and filled with potential. Solutia goes to great lengths to extrude high strength fiber and Nyloboard takes advantage of those fibers instead of destroying them in the process. This is a novel approach to the recycle challenge," Peoples said.

Most used carpet is sent to the landfill every year. "There's a lot of oil in those carpets and Nyloboard allows us to recover that value," stated Peoples. "If we can find a way to get another use out of this material, or better yet, find ways to use it over and over, we could save a lot of valuable resources."

Solutia has a dual strategy to manage carpet waste. First, to find ways to put recycle content back into fibers for carpet. Solutia's family of Renew(TM) recycled Nylon 6,6 is a step in that direction. Second, to find non-carpet outlets for post industrial and post consumer products. Nyloboard is one such product family. "We are excited by the opportunity to participate in the development of environmentally-friendly products and Nyloboard(TM) is one creative step in that direction," concluded Peoples.

Solutia's strategic partnership with Nyloboard LCC will allow us to work closely in the development and marketing of this family of products
