Focus on further development of transparent electroconductive glasses and flexible reaction to the demands of the marketplace / Acquisition of the patents from its cooperation partner lif GmbH  Grünenplan, July 6, 2010 – SCHOTT has now acquired the complete portfolio of patents on LEDs mounted on top of glass, in other words “LightPoints” and all rights of use from its cooperation partner lif GmbH.

The company began launching these products under its own direction on July 1, 2010. SCHOTT has been manufacturing and marketing this type of LED technology in combination with glass in cooperation with lif since 2003. As part of this collaboration in the areas of research, development, manufacturing, and sales of transparent electroconductive glass, SCHOTT was responsible for the technological know-how in the area of manufacturing as well as its application.

SCHOTT decided to continue running this business on its own while still working together closely with lif because this will allow the company to use the group’s own resources and thus gain more clout and display greater flexibility. In doing so, SCHOTT will be strengthening its product portfolio in the area of architecture rather significantly. In the future, customers will benefit from direct and easier communication at every level, in addition to innovative further developments, high-quality technologies and shorter delivery times.

“LightPoints” represent the unique ability of having light diodes (so-called LEDs or light emitting diodes) float freely and glow inside glass. Unlike similar optical techniques that rely on visible conductors inside laminated glass, with “LightPoints” the power (low voltage direct current) is supplied by a nearly invisible conductive coating on the glass. A transparent pane of conductive base glass is equipped with LEDs and then joined together with a cover glass to form a laminated PVB (polyvinyl butyral) glass panel. These glass units are available in different sizes and quantities of LED LightPoints.

“LightPoints” products can be used to create stunning effects in a variety of different areas, for instance in the lighting industry, for displays, in architecture and in façade construction, for fall prevention and overhead glazing, interior fittings and the furniture industry, as well as trade fair stand construction and the automotive industry.
