SCHOTT Defense Showcases Glass Technologies Aimed to Reduce Size, Weight, Power, and Cost for the U.S. Military

SCHOTT, working at the forefront of glass and optics innovation, is zeroing in on the modern military’s requirements to supply materials that reduce size, weight, power, and cost.

SCHOTT will display these technologies and offer a technical presentation and demonstration of their military applications at the Defense Security and Sensing (DSS) Conference in Baltimore from April 20 to 24, 2015.Mindful of changing combat conditions, SCHOTT delivers materials that reconceive applications and systems used by the U.S. military, whether in the air, on land, or at sea.These rugged glasses and glass-ceramics are key components in a wide range of military equipment, from night vision systems in helmets, to thermal imaging systems on helicopters, to tactical wheeled  vehicle armor, to sensitive ordnance and missile systems.



For example, SCHOTT manufactures glasses with superior transmission in shortwave, midwave, and longwave IR. IRGX and IRC expand optical capabilities in defense applications that include night vision googles and thermal cameras. In addition, single-aperture multispectral glasses can reduce the size and weight of imaging systems on ships, in planes and other platforms  with size constraints. Neodymium- and erbium-doped laser glasses, engineered through precise methods that extend their lifespan and durability, are being used in high-power, ultra-short pulse lasers and range finders.



In addition to the glasses and materials on display at DSS, SCHOTT experts will present advancements in eye-safe laser glass and 3D volumetric display technology in a technical presentation and a product demonstration, respectively.


  • Dr. Simi George, SCHOTT Research and Development Scientist, will present “Thermally and Mechanically Enhanced Phosphate Glasses for Eye-Safe Lasers” on Tuesday, April 21 at 3:30 p.m. in Conv. Ctr. Room 342. George will discuss eye-safe laser glass, ideal for operations at 1.5 µm in medical applications, laser radars, analytical measurement, and range finding.

  • Jim Stein, Vice President of Government Relations at SCHOTT Defense, will host a product demonstration with 3DIcon on April 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the product demo area. Stein will detail the evolution of 3D display technology, how 3D improves situational awareness for the warfighter, and the role of innovative glass materials in improving the quality of these systems.
