In 2007 the original station was closed and the demolition works started. The revamped station will be complete at the beginning of 2013.
The glass roof-covering is part of the reconstruction and modernization of the Central Station and its surroundings. Due to (among other things) the arrival of Randstad Rail and the HSL-Zuid, the number of passengers will be growing exponentially. Extending the station is crucial in order to be able to accommodate this increase in passenger numbers, for the future as well, says client ProRail.
Light ingression, heat from the sun and a modern, contemporary design constitute significant elements in architect Jan Benthem’s design. To this end, Scheuten is supplying a total of 30,000 m of laminated glass in three different compositions. The glass comes from the modern float glass factory in Osterweddingen (Germany). Here Scheuten manufactures extra-clear glass which boosts the translucence and transparency of its products. In addition to this, the glass for Rotterdam’s Centraal Station has a special coating that ensures optimum use of heat from the sun. The glass is also supplied with a silk-screen print, providing a sleek and modern appearance.
