Instructor Emilio Santini demonstrates and assists participants making Venetian-style goblets at the torch as well as sculpting human and mythical figures. His one-on-one instruction leads beginning-to-advanced students through the creative process. Students use clear and colored soft glass, borosilicate and Conturax tubing. The course costs $359.
An Italian-born glass artist, Santini was born into a noble family with a 600-year glassblowing tradition. His father, a glassblower and self-taught lampworker, was his first teacher. Now a Williamsburg, Va., resident, Santini's work is featured in numerous private and museum collections.
This is the first of four workshops being offered this fall.
"Still More Glass Beads" will run Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This workshop -- ideal for beginners to intermediate glass bead enthusiasts -- focuses on making beads from Italian Moretti colored glass rods, known for their rich colors and great working qualities. The workshop costs $99.
"More Marble Making" will run Nov. 6, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This workshop teaches introductory through intermediate glass workers the skills necessary to make colorful borosilicate glass marbles. The instructor demonstrates and individually assists participants in the latest techniques being used to make contemporary glass marbles. The workshop costs $99.
"Holiday Glass Ornament Making" will run Dec. 4, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This workshop -- ideal for beginner to intermediate students -- explores the tradition of glass holiday ornaments. Students make clear and colored icicles, sculptured ornaments such as snowmen and angels, and hand-blown balls. The workshop costs $99.
SCC to offer glass course with world-renowned instructor
Salem Community College will offer a course with world-renowned glass artist Emilio Santini in early September. "Venetian Glassblowing" will run Friday through Sunday, Sept. 9 to 11, from 4 to 8 p.m.
