The exhibit, which runs through July 8, 2007, has more than 125 pieces, and marks the first and only combined exhibition of this magnitude in North America for the couple.
"Rockford Art Museum has the unique opportunity to simultaneously showcase the Valliens and their tremendously different interpretations, expressions and ideas, despite sharing an interest in glass and having a personal relationship," said Linda Dennis, executive director, Rockford Art Museum. "As two of Sweden's most famous artists, they have each pioneered separate studio glass techniques, and this joint exhibition illustrates how impactful the Valliens' work has been, even to artists like Dale Chihuly and the Kosta Boda glasshouse."
Featured in the museum's Funderburg and Kuller galleries, the massive 10,000-square-foot exhibition encompasses Bertil's series of glass boats, maps, and heads, and Ulrica's work in glass and two-dimensional media. Special to this exhibit is a portion of Bertil's Karolina Installation, inspired by an old Swedish tale about a schoolgirl, Karolina. Ulrica's work, which can be seen around the world on the tails of British Airways planes, on linen bed sets, and on Ericsson mobile phones, is showcased here through standard-setting pieces such as Snakeflowers, eggs, nests, and highly recognizable paintings.
