Vitro was designated by General Motors (GM) to supply the automotive glass for the new version of the Pontiac Solstice Convertible Sport Coupe an impressive sports car with a spectacular 2.4 liter motor that generates 176 horsepower and was introduced to the market in 2009.

According to Antonio Julían, Commercial Manager for Original Equipment of the Vitro Flat Glass business unit, the windshield supplied for this car presented important challenges. “We’re talking about the manufacture of a complex curved windshield as well as the design and development of a special mold to compensate for a car with a very thin structure in its bodywork”, he explains. He adds that the dimensional control is very precise; due to the type of vehicle structure the locating pins had to be moved to the lower corners instead of locating them in the upper part where they normally are located.

Additionally it includes a special bracket for satellite location purposes. For the door windows a 5mm thick glass was used with a hydrophobic covering to repel water, as well as forming a tight seal that isolates the car from exterior noise and humidity.

For its spectacular design this car will become the next Classic Car. “We are proud to know that our bid was the best in terms of development time and design support for this GM project, a client who has awarded us as the Supplier of Year in seven of the last eight years” he confirms. Julián concludes by pointing out “now more than ever, at Vitro we are committed to contributing to our clients’ success in meeting their objectives by supplying products and services with the quality they are accustomed to receive from us just like we have done for many years”.
