A "staggering" five years without a lost time accident has earned Pilkington Middlesbrough a top performance award at the Annual Glass Health and Safety Conference.

The branch won the category for sites with fewer than 50 employees with what judges described as a "phenomenal" success rate for its safety programme.

And Pilkington's Bradford branch shared in the glory by winning the award for sites with up to 250 employees. Bradford has achieved nearly two years without an LTA and has reached the Level 3 in the BPE European Review and Evaluation system.

Pilkington scooped a total of five awards at the conference. Best Safety Initiative went to float manufacturing for their redesign of risk assessments as lively storyboards illustrated by digital photographs.

And individual awards went to Neil Conley and Frank Briscoe, both from Greengate. Neil was named best H&S representative for his work in improving contractor performance, achieving zero injuries in just 12 months.

Frank won the employee contribution award for his work in improving the safety culture in the manufacturing areas. The judges said that his work "has made a significant improvement not only to health and safety but also to efficiency, demonstrating that good health and safety really is good for business."

Nick Shore, managing director, Building Products UK & Ireland said: "I was delighted to be involved in this event that recognises good performance with regard to safety, particularly as Pilkington was so well represented among the award winners."
