Aa well as general maintenance advice, Pilkington Automotive encourages vehicle manufacturers to make sure car owners are aware of the dangers that could permanently damage windshields.

Pilkington Automotive offers the following tips for keeping windshields damage-free:If the glass has a stone chip, it is best to get it fixed as soon as possible.Make sure windshield wipers are kept in top condition.Being patient and using the car heaters is the best way to de-ice a windshield. The least preferable action a driver can take is to throw hot water onto a cold windshield. The dramatic change in temperature could propagate any existing small cracks.

Clean with care - be careful not to use any harsh abrasives as these can leave permanent marks on the surface of the glass.

Don't wear jewellery - a scratch from a ring can leave permanent damage and impair driver vision.

Take care when driving - in cold, wet and icy weather, the windshield can become dirty very quickly. Make sure the washers are permanently topped-up.
