Lucy Kinder from Withington Girls School in Manchester and Alexander Trevaskis from St Edward's College in Liverpool have been selected as 2003 Pilkington Arkwright Scholars.
They were among more than 604 youngsters from schools across the country who applied to take the scholarship exam in 2003. Of these, 220 were selected for interview and 162 were successful.
The Arkwright scheme was founded in 1991 to identify young innovators and encourage the top engineers of the future. More than 300 schools across the UK now take part and the industrial sponsors include Rolls Royce, the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force and Pilkington.
The scholarship consists of an award of £900 over two years, which is divided equally between the successful scholar - to support their sixth form studies - and the Technology Department at his or her school.
