Pilkington regulatory marketing manager Phil Brown has been appointed President of the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF).

The Federation represents companies which make, supply or fit, glass and glass related products, including all types of windows and IGUs, related hardware and solar control applied films and sealants.Phil will serve for two years from January 1st 2010."My appointment comes at a very crucial time for the industry," he said.

"As 2010 is likely to see another year of difficult trading for the glass industry in the UK, the focus will be on providing greater support to existing members whilst still attracting new members.

"Significant regulatory changes are expected to be implemented in 2010, not least the revision of Part L of the Building Regulations in England and Wales, which will be the next step on the road to zero carbon buildings as standard. This will bring an increased emphasis on solar energy applications, further highlighting the crucial role that glass can play in delivering low and zero carbon buildings."

The GGF is currently campaigning for a reduced rate of VAT for the installation of energy-efficient windows and the introduction of a window scrappage scheme. A petition has been set up on the No 10 website for this latter initiative.

Meanwhile, the Federation has recently moved into a new HQ , designed to show off the potential of modern glass products - including energy-saving glass from Pilkington.

* Rick Wilberforce, formerly of Pilkington, is a past President of the GGF and still works for the Group as a public affairs advisor.
