The torch which carried the Olympic flame to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games is crowned with borosilicate glass from Schott. 11,500 glass crowns were produced by Schott Boral in Croatia for the 13,500 mile relay which passed through 48 states on its way to the Rice-Eccless Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah.
An estimated 3.5 billion people around the world watched live as the cauldron was lit during the opening ceremony on February 8.
The glass crown was manufactured using a non-rotation blown-ware operation. While the base is pressed in a mold and therefore uniform from torch to torch, the top of the crown has been hand-processed. The top edges were ground and fire polished to achieve the look of a melting icicle, making each of the crowns an original.
