Norton Pike Industries, a manufacturing firm that has existed in Littleton for more than a century - one of the original seven businesses which formed the Littleton Area Chamber of Commerce - is closing its doors here soon.

In a statement released from the company's parent, Saint-Gobain Abrasives in Worcester, Mass., confirmed that the firm will be shutting its Littleton plant by the end of the year.

Spokeswoman Susan E. Lindsey said a total of 43 workers will lose their jobs as a result of the closing.

Littleton interim Town Manager Tony Mincu on Thursday said he still had not received any official confirmation about the plant closing, but had called the company, to see what, if anything, the town could do to help reverse the decision.

He said a few members of the town's business community had visited the plant on Thursday, but had not been able to speak to anyone, either.
