Milly Glass Works Limited, one of the largest glass manufacturers in the country, has closed down. The company belongs to Mombasa-based business tycoon and former nominated MP Rashid Sajjad.

The firm has consequently sacked over 250 permanent employees who visited our Mombasa bureau to demand that the management addresses their fate.Sajjad also owns Milly Fruit Processing, Milly Maize Millers and several other business concerns in Mombasa.Milly Glass Works manufactures glasses of all types, soda bottles and plates. The workers were treated to a rude shock yesterday morning when they were informed that the company had closed down and that there was no more work for them."We were supposed to be given a three-month notice. An abrupt closure like this is questionable and we want the Government to intervene," they said.

Efforts to get comment from the company managers were unsuccessful. Sajjad also could not be reached on his cellphone.

The management, in a letter to the Labour office, said substantial losses made by the company and the increase in costs like fuel, oil and gas, led to the firm's closure.
