"This innovative program is part of our Family Access to Science and Technology initiative," said Beryl Rosenthal, Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs. "Not only is it one of the many ways we share MIT's knowledge with the community, but it also gives families a chance to gain a better understanding of the art and technology of glass."
Co-sponsored by the MIT Museum and the MIT Department of Materials Science, participants will see how MIT's Department of Materials Science investigates glass, its technology and art. Guided tours of the MIT Glass Lab will be available with MIT students demonstrating glass-blowing techniques. Participants will also view the Incandescent Spirit: Page Hazlegrove exhibit at the MIT Museum's Compton Gallery, an exhibition on the art of blown glass. Family activities will include simulating glass blowing by blowing bubbles, designing glass windows, and a hands-on investigation of a glass pumpkin patch.
