Largan Precision, Taiwan's second-largest manufacturer of optical lenses, has decided to begin producing molded glass aspherical lenses instead of continuing to import from Japan, according to company chairman Scott Lin.

Largan specializes in manufacturing plastic aspherical lenses used in digital cameras and camera phones. However, the increase in demand for more slim-type (thin and light) cameras, requires the use of molded glass instead of plastic aspherical lenses, Lin indicated.

Largan already has key manufacturing technology for molded glass aspherical lenses, and so can minimize the test time needed prior to volume production, Lin emphasized. However, the company has not yet scheduled production, Lin added.

In related news, the company has finished design of its 2-megapixel auto-focus lenses for use in camera phones and is waiting for orders, Lin said.
