Lancaster Colony Corp. said Wednesday it will lay off 140 workers at an industrial glass-making facility in Fairfield County it plans to close.
The company said it will phase out production at its facility at 240 W. Main Street in Lancaster by the end of June and shutter the plant by the end of the year.
Lancaster Colony began notifying workers this week of the layoffs. After the facility closes, the company will have about 5,360 workers at 21 facilities nationwide.
"The decision to close our Lancaster Glass business results from continuing declines in volume and profitability," CEO John B. Gerlach Jr. said in a release.
The company's glassware and candles segment has experienced narrowing sales, with a 7.3 percent drop to $216.5 million for 2006. The segment made up 18.5 percent of the company's sales of $1.17 billion last year.
