The twin-towered, glass-skinned high-rise that straddles the main train station in the city of Nagoya has entered the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest building housing a railway terminal.
The JR Central Towers, which house a hotel, department store and office space, form a distinctive peak in the skyline of Nagoya, a city of 2.1 million people about 168 miles west of Tokyo.Underneath the soaring buildings, more than 160,000 people rush through the station's ticket gates every day, according to regional rail operator JR Tokai.Built in 1999, the twin skyscraper splits into two towers halfway up its 804-foot facade.Inside, it has 4.4 million square feet of floor space.
Japan Railway spokesman Tomofumi Ikeda said JR Tokai applied to the record book last November, even though Guinness didn't have such a category at the time.
A Guinness certificate awarding the honor was delivered to the railway Tuesday, he said.
