Africa: New Glass Factory Inaugurated

Ethiopia on Tuesday inaugurated Hansom International Glass PLC which will produce sheets of glass expected to save the country a lot of foreign currency when full-fledged production begins.
The factory which has started trial production has the capacity to produce 42,000 tonnes of glass a year, and can also recycle used glass. CGC Overseas Construction Group Ltd and China-Africa Development Fund are the joint shareholders in the company with a registered capital of $16 million.
The Ethiopian Review reported Hansom’s deputy general manager Jason Jiang saying the company would also export glass to the east African region. Halcom sources raw materials such as dolomite, feldspar, silka sand and limestone locally, and imports sodium carbonate from China.
Future plans involve manufacturing glass for vehicles.
