Safety First For Jewson

Jewson, the UK’s leading supplier of sustainable timber and building materials, has scooped four Silver Awards from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) in their annual Occupational Health and Safety Awards – a coup that highlights Jewson as being one of the safest organisations in the UK to work for as it takes the health and safety of its workforce very seriously.

Jewson won awards for its operations in Scotland, Wales, East, West and Central England, illustrating the merchant’s focus on health and safety on a nationwide basis and the commitment of its UK workforce to securing the prestigious award. The awards were presented during a ceremony at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel on Wednesday 13 May.

Kevin Crawley, Health and Safety Director at Saint-Gobain Building Distribution, of which Jewson is a part says: “These awards show we are improving year-on year – this year we have won an unprecedented nine awards across the Group, four of which were for Jewson. Last year we won eight and the one before that five. This emphasis on continuous improvement is in line with our overall strategy to ensure a safe working environment for our employees and Jewson has once again demonstrated best practice whilst setting industry standards. This is a fantastic achievement for Jewson and I am delighted that we have, once again, secured external recognition for everyone’s considerable efforts through these prominent awards.”

David Rawlins, RoSPA awards manager, comments: “Jewson has shown a commitment to protecting the health and well-being of its employees and others. Entering the RoSPA Awards reinforces the message that good health and safety is good for business, and clearly demonstrates an organisation’s dedication to improving performance in this crucial area.”

To achieve a RoSPA Silver Award Jewson had to answer key performance questions, provide evidence of occupational health and safety management systems and culture, improve compliance with control measures for principal risks and action on health issues, and reduce accident rates, ensuring that no fatal or major injuries occurred due to employer negligence.

The awards are judged by an expert adjudication panel which is a sub-committee of the RoSPA National Occupational Safety and Health Committee.
