Who is most likely to make a difference to recycling in the UK?
|
Peter Jones of Biffa Waste Services has been described as Waste managements greatest advocate, and judged more influential than environment minister Michael Meacher in a Hot 100 list of the most powerful people in sustainable waste management.
The list, published by industry trade paper, Resource magazine, and compiled from nominations made by readers and visitors to the Institute of Waste Management and Community Recycling Network conferences, details the 100 people most likely to make a difference to recycling in the UK.
The magazine placed Peter at number three and praised him for putting rubbish on the national agenda. Tony Blair was placed fourth and Michael Meacher at 14.
Im absolutely amazed, said Peter. Waste is perceived as boring and complex - which is why politicians and the media have ignored it for so long - but it is not, far from it, as events have shown with public interest in charging, fridges, dumped cars and so on.
The aim, he added, is to strive for the right mix of Government instruments and recycling infrastructure support.
