Y.C. Lin Named the 32nd Phoenix Award Winner

Y.C. Lin, chairman of Taiwan Glass Industry Group, has been named the thirty-second recipient of the Phoenix Award given by the leading suppliers to the glass industry.

The Phoenix Award is presented annually to an individual who has made a noteworthy contribution in the glass industry in the field of science, art, production or education, relating to glass containers, fiberglass, scientific glass, flat glass, tableware and electronic glass.

Lin is recognized in the Asian glass-making arena as a leader in the production of float glass, roll glass, tableware, fabric glass, fiber glass and containers. His efforts brought the latest technology to the glass industry in Asia.

Through his ability to build the glass export business, which resulted in bolstering the economy, Lin received the admiration of the government. In 1964, when the United States aid to Taiwan was terminated, the government desired to gain foreign exchange via exporting of products. They called upon Lin to build a plant capable of manufacturing glass worthy of export. With only 27 shareholders, Lin accepted the challenge and installed the Fourco process with 150 million Taiwan dollars.

Taiwan Glass Industry Group is recognized as one of the top five fiberglass producers in Asia producing 50,000 tons per year. The company continues to expand the glass industry in China from retained earning. Today, the corporation is worth 112 billion Taiwan dollars, in paid up capital ($960 million U.S.) with 35,000 shareholders.

As an early industry leader in his own right, Lin installed his first float furnace in Taiwan with a license from Pilkington. Since that time, he has constructed two more furnaces, creating a three-furnace operation in Taiwan. There are two floats in China, a third (in Chengdu) is under construction and a fourth plant is on the drawing board.

The honor of "Glassman of the Year" will be bestowed on him at a banquet in Portland, Oregon, on September 13, 2002.
