Rohm and Haas enters alliance with Cyclics Corp. to develop cyclic thermoplastic powder coatings

The Morton Powder Coatings division of Rohm and Haas has formed a research and development alliance with Cyclics Corp. to develop low-viscosity powder coating formulations using Cyclics CBT resins. The low viscosity of Cyclics CBT resin will help this business develop powder coatings to create thinner thermoplastic coatings than are currently possible with standard thermoplastics. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The Morton Powder Coatings research and development team will work with research experts from Cyclics to determine how the material can best be incorporated in powder coating applications. The Morton Powder Coatings provides a leadership position in the market with over 40 years of experience in the development, production and support of powder coating applications. Morton Powder Coatings’ initial areas of focus will be to examine powder coating formulations with different performance characteristics and to identify market opportunities where the Cyclics resins will offer performance advantages.

“We are extremely excited about working with the Cyclics team to expand the market for Cyclics CBT resin into powder coatings. The many advantages of Cyclics CBT resin will create new opportunities in the powder coatings industry,” said Steve Kiefer, Director of New Product Development for Morton Powder Coatings.

The two companies envision that Cyclics’ resin systems will offer unique solutions to problems faced by existing powder coating materials. The thermoset-like processing properties make CBT powder coatings almost a drop-in to existing powder coating lines. Two additional benefits of powder coatings made from CBT resins are that they possess the toughness of an engineering thermoplastic and release absolutely no emission on curing.

“Cyclics Corporation is impressed by both Morton Powder Coatings' industry expertise and material science leadership," said John Ciovacco, Chief Executive Officer of Cyclics Corporation. "Our teams are well matched in this initiative to develop products in the growing powder coatings marketplace.

Cyclics Corporation, headquartered in Schenectady, New York, sells an innovative plastic that is a breakthrough in processing, making new products possible and changing the economics of existing ones. Cyclics resins offer the processing advantages of a thermoset, namely the low viscosity, but have the material properties of a thermoplastic when polymerized. Cyclics products are useful in structural composites, compounding and powder coating, where the water-like viscosity of these cyclic materials allow for excellent processing, extremely high filler volumes and unique polymer chemistries.

Morton Powder Coatings, headquartered outside Reading, PA, in Flying Hills, is the largest North American manufacturer of powder coatings for general industrial markets and one of the leading producers of powder coatings worldwide.
