Building On Dreams

Architect John Howey envisions a 50-story glass high-rise on Whiting and Franklin streets, the southernmost tip of downtown. The design evokes a communications tower that Howey remembers once dominated Tampa's skyline and would link the city's past and future.

His tower would have shops, restaurants, offices, a hotel, apartments and below-ground parking.

``It's a symbol for Tampa in the 21st century,'' he said. ``We felt we ought to make a statement for Tampa.''

For now, though, Howey's vision is just an architect's model. And it will take two years to build, once a developer is onboard.
