Schott Glas: Innovation in polymer coatings

A technology that is already successful at Schott Glas is now being used by Schott HiCotec for the coating of surfaces of plastics. With the help of the worldwide patented PICVD (Plasma Impulse Chemical Vapor Deposition) process it is possible to apply complex multilayers at low temperatures in addition to conventional coatings.

The greatest strength of PICVD is its ability to apply different functionalities in a single working stage on the same surface at the same time and customer-specifically. This economic and rapid process can be used for both functional and decorative coatings according to the specific requirement.

The fields of application for it range from anti-scratch and anti-reflective coatings, for such things as display covers on mobile telephones and navigation systems, via special functionalities for plastic optics to barrier and decorative coatings for the packaging industry.

PICVD is also highly flexible as regards its production technology. Hollow containers for example can be coated both inside and outside and flat substrates can be coated on both sides at the same time. In particular the processing of PMMA plastics is significantly more economic and simpler than with the alternative and more complex production processes, which had to be used previously.

The company is aiming to use this technology to make advances in particular in the coating of polymers. In addition to the actual coating of products Schott HiCotec can also supply complete machines and production systems for PICVD coating.
