Grand Canyon Skywalk featured at Chicago Museum

Saint-Gobain glass of the same type used to make the Grand Canyon Skywalk is now featured in a special exhibit at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry.

The Museum’s new special exhibit, “The Glass Experience,” showcases glass artifacts which spotlight innovation and cutting edge design in a wide variety of glass applications, teaching guests how the art, science and technology of glass influence our culture, lifestyle and economy in a multitude of ways.

In the exhibit’s The Future of Glass section, Saint-Gobain donated-glass is used in an interactive exhibit in which museum-goers can walk on a section of the Skywalk glass bridge, positioned 4,000 feet above the Canyon floor—or so it seems, with the help of large photographs of the Canyon to simulate the experience. Guests walk across a piece of the bridge made of virtually unbreakable Saint-Gobain glass, and learn how layer upon layer of the strongest glass available, joined with structural adhesives, make the Skywalk a reality.

The Museum of Science and Industry is one of the leading science museums in North America, and has been in operation since 1933. The Museum’s The Glass Experience runs through September 1st, 2008.
